The Low Down on Low Libido

What’s behind it & what you can do about it.

By Team OLLY | 5 minute read

Here at OLLY, we have a philosophy that sexual wellness is a part of a person's overall wellbeing. We're all about personal pleasure and feeling confident in our sexual selves. At the same time, we recognize this doesn’t always come easily (pun very intended). For an array of reasons, mini to mighty, your sex drive may have taken a backseat—or might not be in the car at all.

The Goods Inside

  • Lagging libido is a common issue—for women & men
  • Root causes span mental to physical
  • Lovin’ Libido might just be the solution you’re seeking

The very good news: you’re not alone and support is out there. Let’s dig in.

Everybody deserves desire. But if you're like 70% of women, then your libido may not have gotten the memo.1

What’s considered a low libido?

A lacking libido (a.k.a sex drive) is having little to zero interest in getting frisky—including masturbation. This includes rarely or never having sexual fantasies or thoughts. In can be temporary or long term.2

What causes libido to lag?

The causes can be complex and influences span from physical to mental, life stage to lifestyle. We’ll cover a few of the more common ones here, but please note there might be some sex drive saboteurs in your life that we don’t touch on.

Hormonal Changes

For women, changes in hormones are common during pregnancy, breastfeeding, perimenopause and menopause.

During menopause, estrogen levels drop, which can lead to sex disinterest and vaginal dryness.3 During pregnancy, postpartum and breastfeeding, hormonal changes (not to mention exhaustion and body changes) can dampen desire. While this is completely normal, it can feel overwhelming.

(Please note that OLLY’s Lovin’ Libido doesn’t have any impact on hormones.)

Physical Root Causes

Pain during sex, not being able to orgasm, certain medications and diseases can all lower your libido. Weight gain is another common issue that can lead to a lack of intimacy.2

Sex drive struggles affect many of us regardless of age and life stage.

Mental Health & State of Mind

Depression, anxiety and stress take a toll on our lives in many ways, including our desire for sex and personal pleasure.2 Relationship issues also fall under this umbrella. For many, emotional closeness is a key to sexual intimacy—if there's a lack of connection, this can lead to a lack of libido.

Kicking Stigma to the Curb

Sex drive struggles affect many of us regardless of age and life stage, yet there’s often hesitation to talk about it—even to close confidants. This can make it feel like an incredibly isolating issue. Social media and increased research have helped normalize the conversation, but we still have a way to go.

The bottom line

There’s no shame in this very real, very human issue. The more we connect about it, the more progress we can make.
